多重露光とは？フィルム写真の魅力を深掘り！

こんにちは！今回から私の作品の特徴である「多重露光」について深掘りするブログを始めます。ホームページでは基本的な説明をしていますが、このブログではさらに細かいテーマに分けて、多重露光の魅力やテクニックを紹介していきます。読んでいただく皆さんの撮影の参考になったり、私の作品への理解を深めてもらえれば嬉しいです。では、初回のテーマは「多重露光とは？」についてお話しします。

多重露光って何？

多重露光とはフィルムカメラの場合、フィルムの1コマに複数回撮影（露光）する技法のことです。通常は1回撮影（露光）するごとにフィルムを1コマ巻き上げますが、多重露光ではフィルムを巻き上げず、そのまま同じコマに次の撮影を続けます。異なる被写体や、同じ被写体を重ねることで幻想的でユニークな効果が生まれます。

ただし、この技法はすべてのフィルムカメラでできるわけではなく、多重露光機能を持つカメラが必要です。また、「多重露光」と「多重露出」は同じ意味で使われますが、特に2回だけ重ねる場合は「二重露光」と呼びます。ちなみに、デジタルカメラでも多重露光機能があれば同様の撮影が可能です。

合成写真とどう違うの？

よく聞かれる質問に「合成写真とは何が違うの？」がありますが、その違いはプロセスにあります。合成写真は、すでに撮影された2枚以上の写真をデジタルソフトで重ね合わせるもの。一方、多重露光は撮影時にカメラの中でフィルムに直接複数回露光（撮影）するアナログな技法です。最終的なビジュアルが似ていることもありますが、プロセスがまったく異なるため、アナログならではの偶然性や独自の味わいが感じられる点が多重露光の魅力です。

From today, I’m starting a blog that will dive deep into the world of “multiple exposure,” which is a key feature of my work. While I’ve provided a basic explanation on my website, this blog will break down the topic into more detailed themes, showcasing the unique techniques and charm of multiple exposure. I hope it will serve as a helpful guide for your own photography and also offer a deeper understanding of my work. So, for the first post, let’s explore the question: What is multiple exposure?

What is Multiple Exposure?

In the case of film cameras, multiple exposure is a technique where multiple shots (exposures) are taken on a single frame of film. Normally, after each shot, you would advance the film to the next frame. However, with multiple exposure, you don’t advance the film, and instead, you continue shooting on the same frame. By layering different subjects, or even the same subject, you can create surreal and unique effects.

5Keep in mind, though, that not all film cameras are capable of this technique— you’ll need a camera with a multiple exposure function. Also, “multiple exposure” and “double exposure” are terms often used interchangeably, though the latter specifically refers to layering two exposures. Interestingly, if your digital camera has a multiple exposure feature, you can also achieve similar results.

How is it Different from Composite Photography?

One of the most common questions I get is, “How is it different from composite photography?” The difference lies in the process. Composite photography involves combining two or more already captured images using digital software, while multiple exposure is an analog technique where the film is exposed multiple times during the shooting process inside the camera. Although the final visuals may sometimes resemble each other, the process is entirely different. With multiple exposure, there’s a sense of serendipity and an organic quality unique to analog photography that gives it its charm.

Although multiple exposure may seem like a simple experimental technique that involves layering different subjects, it’s actually a deeply intricate method that can clearly express the photographer’s concepts and intentions.
