Vol.27 多重露光的撮影裏話：シリーズ「Be Water」その後

シリーズ「多重露光的撮影裏話」。今回は前回に引き続き、僕が住む岐阜県にある、伏流水で満ちた池――通称「モネの池」と、国内外の美しい風景を重ね合わせた多重露光シリーズ「Be Water」についての裏話です。
前回の投稿では、このシリーズがどのような経緯で誕生したのか、その背景を紹介しました。今回はさらに踏み込んで、このシリーズが思いもよらない結果を引き寄せた出来事についてお話しします。

シリーズの拡がりとコロナ禍での停滞

最初に撮影した「モネの池」との重ね合わせが自分のイメージ通りの成果を得られたことで、僕の中でこのシリーズをもっと大きく展開したいという想いが芽生えました。世界各地の美しい風景とモネの池を重ねることで、まるで国境を越えて人々の心をつなぐような作品が生まれるのではないか――そんな壮大なビジョンを描いていたのです。
しかし、ちょうどその頃、新型コロナウイルスの感染が世界中に広がり始めました。国外渡航は不可能となり、計画していた海外撮影はあっけなく頓挫してしまったのです。とても残念ではありましたが、同時に「それならばまずは国内から始めればいい」と気持ちを切り替えるきっかけにもなりました。
日本国内での移動がある程度可能になった時期から、僕は北海道、熊本、香川、三重と、各地を巡りながらこのシリーズの撮影を続けていきました。それぞれの土地で出会う景色は、モネの池との対話を通じて新たな表情を見せてくれ、作品の幅は少しずつ広がっていきました。

集英社から届いた一通のメール

こうして日本各地で撮影を重ね、自分が納得できる作品が徐々に揃い始めました。作品はホームページのギャラリーやSNSに公開し、多くの方々に見ていただくことができました。
そんなある日、思いがけないメールが届きます。差出人は大手出版社・集英社の編集者の方でした。内容は、シリーズ「Be Water」の中の一枚を、これから出版予定の宇佐美まこと氏による小説『夢伝い』の装丁に使用したい、というものでした。
この知らせを受けたとき、僕は本当に驚き、そして心から嬉しく思いました。小説の内容と作品のコンセプトは直接関係していないにも関わらず、装丁として採用していただけたことは、作品そのものが独自の力を持ち、異なる文脈に寄り添えるという証拠のように感じられたのです。今振り返っても、このシリーズに込めた「平和への祈り」のようなコンセプトが、予期せぬ形で実を結んだのだと思っています。

海外での挑戦と新たな展開

コロナ禍が落ち着き、海外への渡航制限が解かれた時、僕は迷わずこのシリーズを海外でも展開することを決めました。最初に向かったのはオーストリアとチェコ共和国。ヨーロッパの風景とモネの池を重ね合わせた作品は、自分の想像を超えるほど美しく仕上がり、大きな手応えを感じることができました。

その翌年にはエジプトへ渡り、新たな挑戦を試みました。これまでの「Be Water」シリーズは海や川といった水辺の風景との組み合わせが中心でしたが、エジプトでは思い切ってモスクを対象に選んだのです。宗教的な施設とモネの池を重ねることで、より平和や祈りを象徴する作品になるのではないかと考えました。
完成した作品は、予想をはるかに超える仕上がりとなり、まさに「Be Water」シリーズの新しい一歩を刻むものでした。その一枚は、今年7月に開催した個展のDMにも採用し、多くの方の目に触れることとなりました。

今後の展望

「Be Water」シリーズは、僕にとって単なる多重露光の技法を使った作品以上の意味を持つようになっています。それは、異なる場所や文化を重ね合わせることで「平和」を象徴するアートを生み出す試みであり、同時に自分自身の表現の可能性を広げてくれるライフワークのような存在です。
これからも国内外の旅を続け、このシリーズをさらに発展させていきたいと考えています。そしていつの日か、世界中の風景をモネの池に映し出すことで、国や文化の垣根を超えたつながりを象徴する作品群を完成させたい――そんな大きな夢を抱いています。

Vol.27 Behind the Scenes of Multiple Exposure Photography: The Story of Be Water

This is the continuation of my series Behind the Scenes of Multiple Exposure Photography.
In this post, I will once again talk about my series Be Water, a body of work created by layering the crystal-clear pond known as “Monet’s Pond” in my home prefecture of Gifu, with beautiful landscapes from both Japan and abroad.
In my previous entry, I shared the background story of how this series came to life. This time, I’d like to go further and talk about an unexpected outcome that this series brought into my life.

Expanding the Vision – and the Halt Brought by the Pandemic

When I first photographed “Monet’s Pond” through multiple exposure and achieved results that perfectly matched my vision, a new idea started to grow in me. I wanted to expand this series and overlay the pond with landscapes from around the world—imagining works that could transcend borders and connect people through beauty.
However, at that exact moment, the COVID-19 pandemic began spreading across the globe. Traveling abroad became impossible, and my plan was suddenly cut short. Though it was a disappointment, it also pushed me to shift my perspective: why not start within Japan first?
As domestic travel gradually became possible again, I began photographing in different regions of Japan: Hokkaido, Kumamoto, Kagawa, and Mie. Each place revealed new sceneries that, when layered with Monet’s Pond, produced surprising and moving results. The series began to expand in ways I had not originally imagined.

An Unexpected Email from Shueisha

As the collection grew, I shared my works continuously on my website gallery and social media. Little by little, the series began reaching more people.
One day, I received an unexpected email—from an editor at Shueisha, one of Japan’s leading publishing houses. The message was simple but astonishing: they wanted to use one of my Be Water works as the cover art for an upcoming novel, Yumetsutai by Makoto Usami.
When I read the email, I was overwhelmed with joy. Although the novel’s story and the concept of my artwork were not directly related, the fact that the piece resonated enough to become the face of a book deeply moved me. For me, it was proof that the unique concept of this series had a strength of its own—one that could transcend contexts and spark new connections. Even today, I believe that the theme of “peace” behind Be Water was what brought about this fortunate encounter.

Taking Be Water Overseas

When international travel finally reopened, I wasted no time in taking Be Water abroad. My first destinations were Austria and the Czech Republic, where the landscapes harmonized beautifully with Monet’s Pond. The images turned out exactly as I envisioned, and I felt a deep sense of fulfillment.
The following year, I set out on a new challenge in Egypt. Until then, I had mainly combined the pond with rivers, seas, and other waterscapes. In Egypt, however, I attempted something different: overlaying the pond with a mosque. My thought was that combining a religious site with Monet’s Pond could create a stronger symbol of peace and spirituality.
The result exceeded all my expectations. The work became one of the highlights of the series, and I even used it as the main visual for the flyer of my solo exhibition in July this year.

Looking Ahead

For me, Be Water has grown to represent much more than just a series of multiple exposure works. It has become a lifelong project—an attempt to symbolize “peace” by uniting different landscapes, cultures, and histories within a single frame.
I plan to continue developing this series, both in Japan and overseas. One day, I hope to create a body of work that reflects the world’s many landscapes in Monet’s Pond, transforming it into a mirror of unity beyond borders and cultures.
