Vol.46 Behind the Scenes of Resonance Vol.1

This blog has mainly focused on different aspects of multiple exposure photography. As many of you already know, I’m currently running a crowdfunding campaign to publish my new photobook, Resonance.

At the same time, the book itself is steadily taking shape. From now on, I’d like to use this blog to share the story behind its creation. In this first post, I’d like to explain how the idea for Resonance began.

Why I Decided to Publish Resonance

So far, I have published three photobooks and seven zines. Most of them have been sold directly at my solo exhibitions and art events because I wanted to personally explain my work and the multiple exposure process behind it. Without that explanation, many people assumed the images were created with CGI or digital compositing.

Today, however, I want to share my work with a much wider audience around the world. One of my goals is to have my photobooks available in museum shops, both in Japan and internationally. Museum shops are places where people visit with a genuine interest in art, making them ideal spaces for my work to be discovered and appreciated.

Of course, I don’t yet have the distribution channels or connections to make that happen. But every journey has to start somewhere, and without a photobook, nothing can begin.
That is why I decided to create Resonance—a collection that represents the culmination of sixteen years of my multiple exposure photography. I hope this book will become my first step toward sharing my work with the world.

Working with My Publisher

Once I decided to publish a new photobook, I immediately thought of working again with 233PRESS, the publisher of my previous book, Mission.
233PRESS is the publishing division of Setagaya233, a gallery in Sangenjaya, Tokyo, that has supported my work for many years.
After sharing my vision and the concept behind Resonance with the gallery owner, Mr. Nakane, he kindly agreed to support the project, and we decided to publish the book together through 233PRESS.

Why I Chose Crowdfunding

There were several reasons for choosing crowdfunding. The first, and most obvious, was funding.
Resonance will be a large-format photobook of approximately 80 pages, making it my most ambitious publication to date. Because of the higher printing and production costs, my publisher and I decided that crowdfunding would be the best way to help finance the project.

The second reason was to reconnect with people and share what I’m creating today.A crowdfunding campaign doesn’t succeed simply by launching a project online. It requires reaching out through social media, but also contacting people personally. It has given me the opportunity to reconnect with friends and supporters I hadn’t spoken with for quite some time and share my current work with them.

The third reason is the opportunity to meet new audiences.Through the crowdfunding platform itself, as well as through supporters who share the project, many people are discovering my photography for the first time.

To me, crowdfunding is about much more than raising money. It creates new connections, expands the reach of my work, and allows more people to become part of the journey behind this book.

Thank you for reading. In the next post, I’ll continue sharing the story behind the making of Resonance.

If you’d like to learn more about the crowdfunding campaign, you can visit the project page through this link. Even simply taking a look means a great deal to me, and if the project resonates with you, I would be truly grateful for your support.
