Vol.42『Resonance』掲載作品と掲載を見送った作品たち

新しい写真集『Resonance』は、16年間にわたり撮影を続けてきた多重露光作品の集大成となる一冊です。これまで発表してきた代表作はもちろん、新作も数多く収録する予定です。今回はその中から掲載予定の作品と、惜しくも掲載を見送ることになった作品を少しだけご紹介したいと思います。

『Resonance』を構成する4つのカテゴリー

まずは、本写真集における作品選定の基準についてお話しします。

『Resonance』は、以下の4つのカテゴリーで構成される予定です。

・クロスプロセス現像と多重露光
・人類と自然の共存をテーマにしたモノクロ多重露光
・平和への願いを込めたカラー多重露光
・シュルレアリスムの影響を受けた多重露光

それぞれ約20点前後の作品を収録する予定ですが、16年間で撮りためてきた作品のストックは膨大な数になります。その中から何を選ぶのか。選定基準はいくつかありますが、最も大切にしたのは「現像が仕上がった瞬間に、自分の心が震え上がったかどうか」です。
フィルムを受け取り、初めて作品を見た瞬間。撮影前に思い描いていたイメージを超えるような重なりや偶然性に出会うことがあります。その瞬間に生まれる心の震えこそが、この写真集のタイトルである『Resonance（共鳴）』の原点となっています。

掲載予定作品を少しだけご紹介

ではここで、実際に掲載を予定している作品を少しだけご紹介したいと思います。

心を震わせながらも掲載を見送った作品たち

一方で、僕の心を震わせた作品でありながら、今回の写真集への収録を見送った作品も少なくありません。

なぜ掲載を見送ったのか。実はその理由は、それほど特別なものではありません。ほんのわずかな重なりのズレや構図の違和感だったりします。ただ、今回の『Resonance』で選んだのは、単に僕の心を震わせた作品だけではありません。
16年間にわたり多重露光と向き合う中で、自分が追い求めてきたイメージと完全に共鳴した作品たちです。掲載を見送った作品も、もちろん大切な作品です。撮影した当時は強く心を動かされましたし、今見返しても魅力を感じます。しかし今回の写真集は、多重露光表現の集大成として制作する一冊です。だからこそ、自分の中で「これ以上はない」と思える作品だけを選ぶことにしました。言い換えれば、この写真集に掲載される作品は、僕が思い描いたイメージを100％実現できた作品、あるいは想像を超える結果によって新たな発見を与えてくれた作品ばかりなのです。

『Resonance』を皆さんと一緒に

さて、この新しい写真集『Resonance』は、7月6日よりスタートするクラウドファンディングを通じて制作・出版を進めていきます。制作チームは、前作『Mission』と同じメンバーです。プロデューサーは世田谷233の中根大輔氏、デザインは小宅一騎氏が担当します。これまで一緒に作品づくりをしてきた信頼できる仲間たちと再び挑戦できることを、とても心強く感じています。
そして何より、このプロジェクトは僕一人で完成させるものではありません。『Resonance』というタイトルには、作品と鑑賞者、そして人と人との間に生まれる共鳴という意味も込めています。
この写真集との出会いが誰かの心を揺らし、その振動がまた別の誰かへと伝わっていく。そんな一冊になればと願っています。ぜひ、この文章を読んでくださっている皆さまと共に、この一冊を形にできたら嬉しいです！

Resonance — The Images Included and Those Left Behind

My new photobook, Resonance, is a culmination of 16 years of multiple-exposure photography.
Alongside many of my most recognized works, it will also feature a number of images that have never appeared in any of my previous photobooks. In this post, I’d like to share a few of the photographs that will be included, as well as some that, despite meaning a great deal to me, did not make the final selection.

The Four Categories That Shape Resonance

First, I’d like to explain the criteria behind the selection process.

The book is organized into four categories:

• Cross-processed multiple exposures
• Black-and-white multiple exposures exploring the coexistence of humanity and nature
• Color multiple exposures expressing a wish for peace
• Multiple exposures influenced by Surrealism

Each section will contain around twenty photographs. However, after 16 years of creating multiple-exposure work, I have accumulated an enormous archive of images. The question was: how do I choose which ones belong in this book?
There were several criteria, but the most important was simple: Did the image make my heart tremble the moment I first saw it?
When I receive developed film and see the images for the first time, there are rare occasions when the result surpasses everything I imagined before pressing the shutter. Unexpected overlaps, surprising visual relationships, and moments of pure chance can come together to create something extraordinary.
That feeling—the vibration that runs through me in that moment—is the very origin of the title Resonance.

A Small Preview of the Images to Be Included

With that in mind, I’d like to share a few of the photographs that are planned for inclusion in the book.

The Images That Moved Me, Yet Were Left Out

There are also many photographs that deeply moved me but ultimately did not make it into Resonance.

Why were they left out?
The reasons are not particularly dramatic. Sometimes it was a slight misalignment between exposures. Sometimes it was a composition that felt just a little off.
However, the photographs selected for Resonance are not simply the ones that moved me emotionally.
They are the works that fully resonate with the vision I have been pursuing throughout these past 16 years.
The excluded photographs remain important to me. Many of them stirred me deeply when they first emerged from the film, and I still find them compelling today. Yet Resonance is intended to be a definitive collection—a culmination of my journey with multiple exposure photography.
For that reason, I chose only the works that felt complete to me, images that left no room for compromise.
In other words, the photographs included in this book are the ones that either realized my original vision completely or surpassed it, revealing something I could never have anticipated.

Creating Resonance Together

Resonance will be produced and published through a crowdfunding campaign launching on July 6.
The creative team is the same one behind my previous photobook, Mission. Producer Daisuke Nakane of Setagaya 233 and designer Kazuki Oyake will once again be joining the project. Having the opportunity to work with trusted collaborators makes this new challenge especially exciting.
Most importantly, however, this is not a project that can be completed by me alone.

The title Resonance also refers to the connection that emerges between artwork and viewer, and between people themselves.
My hope is that this book will touch someone’s heart, and that the vibration created by that encounter will continue to resonate outward to others.
