Vol.22 偶然が生んだ奇跡の多重露光

多重露光の撮影では、ファインダーを覗きながら被写体を確認しますが、実際にどのように重なり合うかはその場ではわかりません。そのため、イメージ通りに仕上がらないこともしばしば。けれどその一方で、まるで奇跡のような想像を超える一枚が生まれることもあるのです。

これは撮影技術だけでなく、その人が持つ運や偶然に大きく左右されるため、残念ながら“成功のコツ”のようなものは存在しません。
今回は、比較的“運の良い”私が生み出した奇跡の多重露光を３点ご紹介したいと思います。

①螺旋階段が虹に？｜奇跡度：80%

この一枚は、上半分を香港、下半分を日本で撮影した「フィルムスワップ」による多重露光です。詳しい撮影方法については、以前のこちらのブログをご参照ください。
この写真の奇跡的なポイントは、上半分で撮影した螺旋階段の手すりが、下半分に写った傘とちょうど重なり、まるで虹のように見えるところです。
通常、フィルムスワップでは1回目の撮影時に何を何枚目に撮ったかメモを取るのが一般的ですが、この時は完全にノーメモ・ノープラン。どんな被写体が重なるか全く予測せずに撮影しました。それにもかかわらず、こんな奇跡的な構図が生まれたのは、まさに“運”のなせる技でした。

②教会が生み出したアンドロイド｜奇跡度：90%

こちらもフィルムスワップによる作品で、スペインのサグラダ・ファミリアの内部と、香港で撮影したモデルを重ねた多重露光です。
このときは、ステンドグラスとモデルを重ねたいというイメージは持っていたものの、どのパーツがどこにあるかという詳細は記録しておらず、感覚的に撮影を行いました。しかし現像してみると、モデルの顔にちょうど教会の装飾とステンドグラスが重なり、まるでゼンマイ仕掛けのアンドロイドのようなビジュアルに。さらに教会内部の柱がモデルの頭部と重なったことで、まるでモデルの髪の毛のように見えるという奇跡的な偶然も起こりました。ステンドグラスの水色と、モデル撮影時の青空が一致していたのも、偶然とは思えない美しい重なりです。

③まるで『猿の惑星』のラストシーン｜奇跡度：100%

現像結果を見た瞬間、鳥肌が立った一枚。
映画『猿の惑星』のラストシーン――自由の女神が海に沈んでいるシーンを思い出させる、まさに映画のような多重露光です。上半分にニューヨークで撮影した自由の女神、下半分に日本の海辺で人の足元を重ねたこの作品。足首に波が当たる瞬間を捉えたショットが、自由の女神の台座とぴったり重なったことで、まるで自由の女神が海に沈んでいるかのような構図になりました。スケール感や配置は全く測っていなかったため、こんなに完璧に重なることは奇跡としか言いようがありません。

A miraculous multiple exposure born of coincidence

When shooting multiple exposures, we often look through the viewfinder and carefully frame our subject—but the actual overlap of images is something we can’t confirm until after the shot is taken. Because of this, the results rarely match our original vision. But on the flip side, sometimes a miraculous and entirely unexpected result emerges—something that surpasses even our imagination.
These moments aren’t something that can be achieved through skill alone; they rely heavily on pure luck. In other words, there are no real “tricks” to success here.
So today, I’d like to share three of my most miraculous multiple exposures—images that I could only have captured thanks to a stroke of good fortune.

① A Spiral Staircase Becomes a Rainbow | Miracle Rating: 80%

This photo was created through a film swap technique, with the top half shot in Hong Kong and the bottom half in Japan. (If you’d like to learn more about how film swapping works, I explain it in detail in another blog post.)
What makes this image truly miraculous is how the railing of a spiral staircase in the upper frame perfectly overlaps with the umbrella in the lower frame—making the staircase appear like a rainbow.
Typically with film swaps, I take notes during the first round of shooting to track what was captured on each frame so I can plan the second exposure accordingly. But in this case, I didn’t take any notes at all. Every shot was completely random.
That’s why this stunning overlap wasn’t intentional—it was entirely left to chance.

② An Android Born from a Cathedral | Miracle Rating: 90%

This multiple exposure features the interior of the Sagrada Família in Spain layered with a model photographed in Hong Kong. I had a vague vision of overlapping the stained glass with the model, but I didn’t document the exact patterns or positions—so I simply shot by instinct.
When the film was developed, I was amazed to see that the stained glass and ornamental details of the cathedral aligned perfectly with the model’s face, making her look like a mechanical android.
Moreover, a miraculous coincidence occurred when a pillar inside the church aligned with the model’s head, making it look just like a part of her hairstyle.The color harmony—between the light blue glass and the blue sky in the model’s background—was yet another happy accident that added to the surreal beauty of the image.

③ A Scene Straight Out of Planet of the Apes | Miracle Rating: 100%

This was the one image that gave me chills the moment I saw the developed film. It instantly reminded me of the final scene in Planet of the Apes—the Statue of Liberty standing solemnly by the sea.
The upper half was taken in New York, capturing the Statue of Liberty. The lower half, taken in Japan, shows waves crashing around a person’s ankle.
The miracle? The moment a wave hit the model’s ankle aligned perfectly with the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, creating a composition that makes it look as if the statue is sinking into the sea.
While I had a loose idea of how I wanted the image to turn out, I wasn’t measuring the exact scale or position of the elements. So for everything to line up this precisely… well, that was nothing short of a miracle.
