Vol.18 多重露光アイデア：映画から着想を得る

多重露光の大きな楽しさの一つに、「偶然の産物」があります。
私はこれを「ハッピーアクシデント」と呼び、予想もしなかった結果との出会いをいつも楽しんでいます。

一方で、ただ偶然に頼るだけではありません。
あらかじめイメージした多重露光の世界を、どれだけ思い通りに表現できるか——そこにもまた、大きな魅力を感じています。

では、その「イメージ」はどこから生まれるのでしょうか？
私の場合、主にふたつのインスピレーション源があります。
ひとつは「映画のワンシーン」。もうひとつは「絵画」です。

今回は、映画のワンシーンから生まれる多重露光アイデアについてお話しします。

クリストファー・ノーラン監督作品から得たインスピレーション

私が特に好きな映画監督に、クリストファー・ノーラン氏がいます。
彼の映画では、「時間」と「空間」が複雑に交錯するストーリーが度々登場し、それが私の多重露光技法——特に「セルフフィルムスワップ」の概念——と深くリンクするように感じています。ノーラン監督の作品は、私にとって多重露光アイデアの宝庫。いくつかご紹介します。

『インセプション（Inception）』

夢の中に思考を植え付けるという壮大なストーリー。
夢の世界ならではの非現実的なシーンが多く、まさに多重露光の宝庫です。

映画そのもののビジュアルだけでなく、「もしノーラン監督ならこんな世界も描いたのではないか？」と想像を膨らませながら、多重露光のイメージを創造しています。

『The Day After Tomorrow』

地球温暖化により突如訪れた氷河期の混乱を描いた映画。
ニューヨークを襲う巨大な波や街全体が凍りつくシーンは特に印象的で多重露光のヒントに大きな影響を与えました。

How I Find Inspiration for Multiple Exposure: The World of Movies

One of the greatest joys of multiple exposure photography is encountering what I call a “happy accident.”
Unexpected results often lead to breathtaking images that could never have been planned.

At the same time, I don’t rely solely on chance.
I also love the challenge of seeing how closely I can realize a pre-imagined multiple exposure vision through careful shooting.

So, where do these “pre-imagined” ideas come from?
For me, they mainly have two sources:
one is scenes from movies, and the other is paintings.

In this blog post, I’d like to share how I draw inspiration from movies for my multiple exposure work.

Inspired by Christopher Nolan’s Films

One of my favorite film directors is Christopher Nolan.
Many of his works intricately weave together concepts of time and space, which closely resonate with my own technique of self film swap in multiple exposure photography.

Nolan’s movies are an endless source of inspiration for me.
Here are a few examples.

Inception

Inception tells the story of planting ideas into a dreamer’s subconscious.
The majority of the film takes place inside dreams, creating surreal and non-realistic scenes—perfect for multiple exposure concepts.

Key inspirations from the film include:

• A castle-like structure by the seaside (appearing in the opening scene)
• The bending and overlapping streets of Paris
• The dream city created by Cobb and his wife Mal
• Skyscrapers crumbling along a coastal line

Interstellar

This story follows a former engineer embarking on a space mission to ensure humanity’s survival.
Since most of the film is set outside Earth, it’s brimming with ideas for otherworldly, multiple exposure compositions.

Key inspirations from the film include:

• Shooting multiple exposures at Svinafellsjökull Glacier in Iceland, a real-world filming location
• Massive waves surging toward the characters
• The surreal image of encountering oneself in outer space
• Visualizing the search for a habitable planet beyond Earth

Rather than copying scenes directly, I often imagine “what kind of visions Nolan himself might have dreamed up” and create my own interpretations through multiple exposure.

Other Films That Sparked Ideas

Beyond Nolan’s works, there are other films that have influenced my photography.

The Day After Tomorrow

This movie portrays a sudden Ice Age caused by climate change.
The scenes of huge waves hitting New York City and the entire city freezing over were particularly impressive and greatly influenced the inspiration for the multiple exposures.

・The Statue of Liberty frozen in place
・People watching frozen Manhattan

From Beginner to Expert: Envision First, Then Shoot

While mastering the technical aspects of multiple exposure is important, the most crucial element is having a strong vision of what you want to create.
If you start every shoot with a clear concept, you’ll naturally step up from beginner to intermediate—and eventually to advanced levels.
