Vol.14 多重露光の撮影アイデア①

これまでのブログで多重露光の特徴や撮影方法について紹介してきましたが、多重露光撮影で一番悩むのは、実は被写体選びではないでしょうか。「何と何を重ねればいいのか？」「重ねるとどんな結果になるのか？」と考え始めると、撮影が進まなくなることもよくありますよね。

そこで、今回から3回にわたって多重露光のアイデアを紹介します。どんな被写体が多重露光に適しているかや、どのように撮影すると効果的なのかについてもご紹介します。今回は「花と重ねる」「看板や落書きを重ねる」「ゴーストショット」の3つのアイデアです。

アイデア1: 花と重ねて色鮮やかに仕上げる

まずは、多重露光の定番ともいえる花との組み合わせです。花は明るい色が多いので、多重露光の特徴である「明るい色が手前に現れる」という効果を活かすことができます。例えば、下のサンプルのように、花が綺麗に浮き上がって見えるようになります。

コツ：
花を撮影する際は、曇りの日や日差しが陰っている時が好ましいです。直射日光が花以外の葉っぱや土に当たるとその反射が花よりも強調されることがあるためです。日差しがないと葉っぱや土が暗くなり、もう一方の被写体と重ねた時にその存在が強調されずに済みます。また、花を真上から撮影するのがおすすめです。さらに、あえてピンボケで撮影することで、抽象的な印象を与えることもできます。

アイデア2: 街中の看板やグラフィティと重ねてデザイン性を高める

街中には様々なデザインの看板やセンスのあるグラフィティ（落書き）があります。これらも多重露光の被写体として魅力的です。

コツ：
明暗のコントラストを意識した構図にすると効果的です。全体的に明るすぎるものや、背景が白い被写体は、もう一方の被写体が見えにくくなることがあるので注意しましょう。ネオンサインも有効な被写体で、その背景が暗い場合はネオンサインだけが浮き上がるような印象的な多重露光に仕上がります。

アイデア3: 体が透き通って見えるゴーストショット

多重露光を使って体が透き通ったように見える「ゴーストショット」に挑戦してみましょう。撮影方法はとても簡単です。

撮影手順：

1. モデルを配置し、三脚を使って1回目の撮影を行います。
2. 1回目の撮影後カメラを全く動かさずに、今度はモデルを外して2回目の撮影をします。

これで、まるで幽霊のように体が透き通った写真が完成します。この撮影方法は、背景がモデルに重なることで、体が透明になったような効果を生み出します。重要なのは三脚を使ってカメラを動かさないことです。カメラが動くと背景がずれてブレた写真になってしまうため注意が必要です。上記右端の写真はカメラを動かさずモデルを移動させて2回撮影したものです。

Vol.14 Multiple Exposure Photography Ideas (1)

In previous blog posts, I’ve introduced the characteristics and shooting methods of multiple exposure photography. However, the most challenging part of multiple exposure photography is often choosing the right subjects. You may find yourself stuck, thinking, “What should I combine with what?” or “What kind of result will I get if I layer these?” This hesitation can sometimes hold back your progress.

So, over the next three posts, I will share some ideas for multiple exposure photography. I’ll also cover what kinds of subjects work well for multiple exposure and how to shoot them effectively. In this post, I’ll introduce three ideas: “combining flowers,” “layering street signs or graffiti,” and “ghost shots.”

Idea 1: Combine Flowers for a Vivid Finish

Let’s start with a classic for multiple exposures: combining flowers. Flowers typically have bright colors, which allows you to take advantage of the key characteristic of multiple exposure—“bright colors appear in the foreground.” For example, in the sample below, the flowers beautifully stand out.

Tips: 
When photographing flowers, it’s best to shoot on a cloudy day or when sunlight is diffused. Direct sunlight reflecting off leaves or soil can sometimes become more emphasized than the flowers. Without sunlight, leaves and soil will appear darker, which helps keep them from overpowering the other subject in the exposure. Additionally, it’s recommended to shoot flowers from directly above. You can also try intentionally blurring the flowers to give the image an abstract feel.

Idea 2: Enhance Design by Layering Street Signs or Graffiti

Street signs and graffiti offer unique design elements and can serve as great subjects for multiple exposure photography.

Tips:
Focus on creating a composition with contrasts between light and dark. If the overall scene is too bright or the subject has a white background, the other subject might not show up clearly, so be mindful of that. Neon signs are also great subjects for multiple exposures, especially when they are set against a dark background. In such cases, the neon sign alone can create a striking, floating effect in the final image.

Idea 3: Create Ghost Shots with a Transparent Body Effect

Try capturing a “ghost shot” where the body appears transparent using multiple exposures. The process is simple:

Steps:

1. Position your model and take the first shot using a tripod.
2. After the first shot, without moving the camera, remove the model and take the second shot.

This creates the illusion of the body being transparent, as the background overlaps with the model. The key is to keep the camera perfectly still with the help of a tripod. If the camera moves, the background will shift, resulting in a blurred image. The photo on the far right shows a result of taking two shots by moving the model without moving the camera.
