Vol.13 ルールはない？ロモグラフィーと自由な撮影の楽しさ

個展やイベントで作品展示をしていると来場された方から「なぜフィルムカメラを使うの？」ってよく聞かれます。今もフィルムカメラを使われている方ならどう答えますか？「フィルム独特な風合いが好き」とか「現像が仕上がるまでのドキドキ感」とか「家族から譲り受けたカメラだから」とか色々あると思います。さて、僕ですがちょっと皆さんとは違うと思います。僕の答えは「ロモグラフィーがフィルムカメラを扱っているから」です。

僕がフィルムカメラにたどり着いた経緯をちょっと話したいと思います。もともと僕はデジタル一眼レフカメラを趣味として使っていましたが、使い始めてから３〜４年が過ぎた頃から徐々につまらなくなってきたのです。それは「僕が撮影している」のではなく、「カメラが撮影している」という感覚になってきたからです。
カメラの機能をフルに生かして撮影していればそんなことを思うことはなかったのかもしれませんが、カメラ任せに撮影していたその当時は自分の意思をカメラに届けていなかったのです。そして自分らしい写真って何だろう？って疑問に思うようになったのです。
教科書通りにカメラを使い、みんなと同じカメラを使い続けて何が楽しいのだろう？って思うようになったのです。そんなことを思い始めた時に現在使っているカメラブランドのLomography（ロモグラフィー）に出会ったのでした。

初めて使ったのはLOMO LC-A+というカメラで実は今でもメインカメラとして15年以上使っています。僕の主観でこのカメラについて言わせてもらうと「じゃじゃ馬で個性的でたまに写ってくれない時もあるけど、自分の意思を持ってシャッターを切るとそれを読み取ってくれるサイコーの相棒」です。
なんか「商品としてそれってどうなの？」って感じの主観ですがこれがロモグラフィー なのです。クレイジーな世界中のユーザーはそれを楽しんでいます。

最後の「ルールなんかないさ！！」なんてそれまでの９つは何だったの？って感じだけど、これがロモグラフィーなんですよね。サイコーじゃないですか？こんなに自由に撮ってもいいって言われたら楽しくて仕方がないですよね。僕はこんなロモグラフィーが好きになったのです。
そんなロモグラフィーはフィルムカメラだけを扱うカメラブランドなのです。だから僕はフィルムカメラを使っているのです。「フィルムカメラを使っている」と言うより、「ロモグラフィーのカメラを使っている」と言った方がしっくりきます。と言うことで、僕は彼らのブランディングにまんまとハマったのでした。

僕がフィルムカメラで撮影し続けているのは、「ロモグラフィーがフィルムカメラを扱っているから」でした。

Rules Don’t Exist? The Joy of Free Shooting with Lomography

“When I exhibit my works at solo exhibitions or events, visitors often ask me, ‘Why do you use a film camera?’ How would you answer if you’re someone who still uses a film camera? Maybe you’d say, ‘I love the unique texture of film,’ or ‘I enjoy the thrill of waiting for the film to be developed,’ or even ‘It’s a camera passed down from my family.’ There are various reasons, but I think my answer is a bit different from most. My answer is, ‘Because Lomography deals with film cameras.’

Let me tell you a little about how I came to use a film camera. Initially, I used to shoot with a digital SLR camera as a hobby, but after about three or four years, I gradually began to lose interest. It started to feel like it wasn’t ‘me taking the photos,’ but rather, ‘the camera was taking the photos.’
Maybe I wouldn’t have felt that way if I had been fully utilizing all the camera’s functions, but back then, I was relying on the camera too much and not conveying my own intentions through it. This led me to start questioning what my own style of photography really was.
I began wondering, ‘What’s so fun about using the same camera as everyone else and following the textbook approach to photography?’ It was around this time that I stumbled upon the camera brand I use today—Lomography.

The first Lomography camera I used was the LOMO LC-A+, and even now, I’ve been using it as my main camera for over 15 years. In my subjective opinion, this camera is a ‘wild, quirky companion that sometimes doesn’t even capture the shot, but when I press the shutter with intention, it understands me and captures the moment perfectly—a superb partner.’

It might sound like a strange endorsement, like ‘How is that acceptable for a product?’ but that’s the beauty of Lomography. Crazy users from all over the world are enjoying this aspect.

And the final rule, ‘ Don’t worry about any rules’ makes you wonder what the previous nine were for, but that’s Lomography for you. Isn’t it amazing? Being told that you can shoot however you like makes the whole experience so much more fun. That’s why I fell in love with Lomography.
Lomography is a camera brand that exclusively deals with film cameras. That’s why I use film cameras. It feels more fitting to say ‘I use Lomography cameras’ rather than just ‘I use film cameras.’ So, in conclusion, I fell completely for their branding.

The reason I continue shooting with film cameras is because ‘Lomography deals with film cameras.’
