Vol.40 僕の人生を変えたインドでのフィルム巻き忘れ

皆さんご存じの通り、僕はフィルムカメラによる多重露光を専門に作品制作をしています。では、なぜ僕は多重露光という表現にここまで惹かれ、撮り続けているのでしょうか。今回は、そのきっかけについて改めてお話ししたいと思います。

すべてはインドでの失敗から始まった

僕が初めて多重露光を撮ったのは、実は意図したものではなく、単なる失敗でした。2010年、僕は二眼レフカメラ「LUBITEL166+」を持ってインドのコルカタを旅していました。当時はまだ二眼レフに慣れておらず、このカメラが完全なマニュアル機であることに何度も振り回されていました。
二眼レフは撮影後に自分でフィルムを巻き上げなければなりません。もし巻き上げを忘れたままシャッターを切ると、前のコマの上に次の写真が重なって記録されます。これが事故的な多重露光です。もちろん、その時の僕は巻き上げを忘れていることに気づいていませんでした。

「今日も順調に撮れているな」

そう思いながら撮影を続けていたのです。

帰国後、現像されたフィルムを見て驚きました。

「なんだこれ!?」

そこには見覚えのある風景でありながら、どこか現実ではない不思議な写真が何枚も写っていたのです。この時、僕は初めて多重露光という表現に出会いました。一般的には失敗写真として扱われることが多い結果ですが、僕は逆に強く惹かれました。なぜなら、写真でありながら肉眼では見ることのできない景色が写っていたからです。
当時の僕は、デジタルカメラによる均質な表現に少し物足りなさを感じ、フィルムカメラへ移行し始めていました。みんなと同じ写真を撮ることに飽きていたのかもしれません。そして、多重露光を見た瞬間に思いました。

「自分が探していたものは、これかもしれない。」

一枚の失敗写真がグランプリを受賞

数か月後、ロモグラフィーがシンガポールのアーティストエージェントDesgin Taxiと共同で「Transportation」をテーマにした国際フォトコンペティションを開催していることを知りました。そこで僕は、インドで偶然撮れていた多重露光の写真（この記事の一番上の作品）を応募してみることにしました。

すると、なんとグランプリを受賞したのです。

受賞作品は、当時香港にあったロモグラフィーのギャラリーで展示されることになりました。スタッフから「オープニングパーティーがあるので、よければ香港に来ませんか？」と声をかけてもらい、僕はすぐに航空券を手配して香港へ向かいました。もちろん旅費は自腹です（笑）。
しかし、この出来事をきっかけにロモグラフィーのスタッフやコミュニティとの交流が始まり、多くの刺激を受けることになりました。

偶然が僕の人生を変えた

本来であれば失敗だったはずの一枚の写真が、国際コンペでグランプリを受賞し、自分の人生を大きく変えることになる。今振り返っても不思議な話です。でも、これこそが僕を多重露光の世界へ引き込んだ最大の理由でした。
それ以来、偶然に頼るだけではなく、自分の意図で多重露光をコントロールする方法を模索し続けています。そして気づけば、それが僕の表現の中心になっていました。

今でもシャッターを切るたびにワクワクする

だから僕にとって多重露光は、単なる撮影技法ではありません。シャッターを切るたびに何が生まれるかわからない。予想していた結果になることもあれば、想像を超える景色が現れることもあります。その予測不能なワクワクこそが、多重露光の最大の魅力です。16年前にインドで起きた一度の失敗がなければ、今の僕の作品も存在していなかったかもしれません。そう考えると、あのフィルムの巻き忘れには今でも感謝しています。

Vol.40 The Roll of Film I Forgot to Advance Changed My Life

As many of you know, I specialize in creating artwork using multiple exposure with film cameras.But why have I become so fascinated by multiple exposure, and why do I continue to pursue it today?I’d like to share the story of how it all began.

It All Started with a Mistake in India

My first multiple exposure was never planned. It was simply an accident.In 2010, I traveled to Kolkata, India, carrying a twin-lens reflex camera called the LUBITEL166+.
At the time, I was still unfamiliar with using a TLR camera. Since it is a fully manual camera, every shot requires you to advance the film yourself. If you forget and press the shutter again, the new image is exposed directly on top of the previous frame. That is accidental multiple exposure.
Of course, I had no idea I had forgotten to advance the film. I happily continued shooting, thinking everything was going perfectly.

What Appeared on the Developed Film

After returning home, I had the film developed.When I saw the results, I was stunned.

“What is this?!”

Several photographs looked familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. They showed scenes I had photographed, yet they felt completely unreal. That was the moment I encountered multiple exposure for the very first time.
Most photographers would probably consider those images failures. But I had the opposite reaction. I was fascinated.
Although they were photographs, they revealed landscapes that could never be seen with the naked eye. At the time, I had already begun moving away from digital photography. One reason was simple: I was growing tired of creating the same kinds of images as everyone else. The moment I saw those accidental multiple exposures,

I felt as if I had found what I had been searching for.

A Failed Photograph Wins First Prize

A few months later, I discovered that Lomography was holding an international photography competition with the theme “Transportation.” I immediately thought that one of the accidental multiple exposures from India—the photograph at the top of this article—fit the theme perfectly. So I submitted it.

To my surprise, it won the Grand Prize!!

The photograph was later exhibited in a gallery attached to a Lomography store in Hong Kong, alongside the other winning works. A staff member invited me to attend the opening party if I was available. I booked a flight almost immediately and headed to Hong Kong. At my own expense, of course 😀

That experience became the beginning of my connection with Lomography and its community. Through those relationships, I encountered countless new ideas and inspirations.

When an Accident Changes Your Life

A photograph that should have been considered a mistake ended up winning an international competition and changing the course of my life. Even now, it feels almost unbelievable. But that experience is exactly what drew me into the world of multiple exposure.
From that point on, I began exploring ways to create multiple exposures intentionally rather than relying on chance alone. Before long, it became the core of my artistic practice.

The Excitement Never Goes Away

For me, multiple exposure is much more than a photographic technique. Every time I press the shutter, I don’t know exactly what will emerge. Sometimes the result matches my vision. Sometimes it reveals something far beyond what I imagined. That sense of unpredictability is what makes multiple exposure so exciting.
If I hadn’t forgotten to advance a roll of film in India sixteen years ago, the work I create today might never have existed. When I think about it that way, I’m still grateful for that simple mistake.
